Writers Studio FAQ

Who is the Writers Studio?

The Writers Studio is a voluntary organization of authors who meet on a regular basis in order to provide support, encouragement, and critiques of each other’s works.

Are there any special requirements for members, like age or previous publication experience?

No. We are open to all authors. The goal is to open the door for anyone interested in writing, regardless of age or prior experience.

What are the requirements for becoming a member?

There really aren’t any—we don’t charge membership fees or demand that you attend a certain number of meetings. The idea is to get writers together to talk about writing. If you'd like to stay informed and get reminders of the meetings then just email: inkwrit at yahoo.com ( remove the spaces and change "at" to "@" ) and request to be added to the email list.

How often does the Writers Studio meet?

We meet once a month, on the 2nd Sunday. We start at 2:00 pm for the Writers Social followed at 4 pm for the actual Writers Critique. We currently hold the social in the art gallery of Convergence Art Guild, 99 S. Main Street, Halifax VA. The critique is held in same building in  the Convergence classroom. Both meetings are open to the public and free to attend.

What exactly does the Writers Studio do?

We provide a support network for authors. During the monthly meetings, anyone who wants to can share what he or she is working on. The group will then open up a discussion on the writing, offering suggestions for improvement, etc. We also make available a quarterly electronic newsletter that features tips on writing and publishing, and two annual anthologies are produced that will feature the works of local authors. Sweetbay Review  is open to all authors with a connection to Virginia. Bull Bay Review  is open to all young authors (age 12-19) with a connection to Virginia

How do I benefit by joining the Writers Studio?

The benefits will mostly depend on how each member decides to participate. The group will certainly provide encouragement and suggestions. You will also have access to a wide variety of writing styles, interests, and experience in publishing, which may then spark further interest in pursuing new avenues in the field of writing.

Is the Writers Studio a publisher?

Yes and no. The Writers Studio publishes a quarterly newsletter, which always features submissions made by members, as well as an annual anthology. The anthologies are made available through Prize Books Publications, The Writers Studio imprint. (Prize Books only accepts submissions by invitation.)

Will being a member of the Writers Studio help me get published?

In the end, each writer is responsible for his or her own publishing ventures. That being said, however, the Writers Studio will provide information about publishing, and the group is always ready to offer helpful suggestions. Many of our members are published.

Will the Writers Studio edit my work?

The Writers Studio is not an editing service, however, writers may share their work with the group during meetings and may request more detailed editing from other members.
